Winter Storage of a Dehumidifier: How to Prepare It

Before storing a dehumidifier for winter, empty and dry its water system, clean the filter, and keep the unit upright in a dry place. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

If you won’t use your dehumidifier during winter, empty and dry it before storing it upright in a dry indoor location. Water left in the bucket, hose, or pump can stagnate, and freezing conditions may damage water-containing parts. Your model’s manual takes priority, especially for storage temperature and drainage instructions.

Prepare the dehumidifier for storage

  1. Turn it off and unplug it. Let the unit stop before disconnecting it. Don’t open the cabinet or spray water into the appliance.
  2. Empty the bucket. Remove it, pour out the water, and clean and dry it according to the manual. Make sure it is completely dry before reinstalling or storing it.
  3. Drain any hose or condensate pump. Disconnect the hose if the manual allows, empty any trapped water, and let the hose dry. If your unit uses a pump, follow its instructions for draining or cleaning it; don’t assume the pump has emptied itself.
  4. Clean the air filter. Remove and clean or replace it as the manufacturer directs. Let a washable filter dry fully before putting it back. A damp filter can encourage musty odors.
  5. Wipe the exterior and air openings. Use a soft, dry cloth, and clear visible dust from the grille without pushing debris inside.

Choose a suitable storage location

Store the unit upright in a dry, sheltered indoor space. Avoid locations where it could be exposed to rain, condensation, extreme temperatures, or freezing conditions. Check the manual for the allowed storage temperature.

Keep the air openings unobstructed. If you cover the unit to protect it from dust, use a clean, dry cover and make sure the appliance is fully dry first. Don’t wrap it in a way that traps moisture.

Check it before using it again

When you bring the dehumidifier out of storage, inspect the cord, plug, bucket, hose, and visible housing for damage, residue, or a musty smell. Reinstall the dry filter and bucket, reconnect drainage only as directed, and place the unit on a level surface with room around its air openings.

If the unit was transported on its side, check the manual before plugging it in; the manufacturer may specify a waiting period or other steps. Stop if you find damaged wiring, a cracked water container, or signs of water inside the electrical housing, and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional.

FAQ

Can I store a dehumidifier in an unheated garage over winter?

Only if the storage conditions are within the temperature and moisture limits in the manual. An unheated garage may expose the unit to freezing temperatures or dampness, so a dry indoor location is safer when the limits are unknown.

Should I remove the filter before storing a dehumidifier?

Clean the filter as directed and let it dry completely. Whether to reinstall it or store it separately depends on the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can a dehumidifier be stored on its side?

Store it upright unless the manufacturer specifically says otherwise. If it was laid on its side during transport, consult the manual before turning it on.
